Hong Kong Chinese New Year Festival: A City Where Wishes Come Alive

February 1, 2026

Chinese New Year is Hong Kong’s most important and spectacular festival—a time when the entire city comes alive with color, sound, and heartfelt wishes for the year ahead. From bustling flower markets to ancient temple rituals and world-class celebrations, the season offers visitors an unforgettable blend of tradition, culture, and modern pageantry.

Throughout the festive period, Hong Kong hosts a rich array of activities. Locals and visitors alike stroll through vibrant Chinese New Year flower markets, filling their homes with blooms that symbolize luck and prosperity. Many also make time to offer prayers at iconic temples such as Wong Tai Sin Temple and Che Kung Temple, seeking blessings for health, happiness, and success in the year ahead. As night falls, the celebrations extend to dazzling fireworks over Victoria Harbour, creating a breathtaking skyline backdrop that marks the New Year in spectacular fashion.

This year, the Hong Kong Tourism Board presents the festive theme “Everywhere A Wish”, inviting travelers from around the world to join in the joy of new beginnings. The theme reflects Hong Kong’s unique New Year spirit—where every street corner, temple, and celebration carries a shared hope for blessings and good fortune.

Leading the series of highlight festivities is the Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade, which officially kicks off the Year of the Horse celebrations. Held on the evening of the first day of Chinese New Year (17 February), this year’s parade is themed “Best Fortune · World Party.” A total of 60 elaborately designed floats and international performing groups will transform the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui into a vibrant global carnival, delighting spectators with music, dance, and high-energy performances while spreading festive blessings to locals and visitors alike.

From solemn traditions to exuberant celebrations, Hong Kong’s Chinese New Year Festival is more than an event—it is a cultural experience that captures the heart of the city. Whether you are welcoming the New Year with incense and prayers, marveling at fireworks over the harbor, or cheering along the parade route, Hong Kong offers the perfect place to begin a joyful and auspicious year.
