PRIVATE SHAM SHUI PO WALKING TOUR WITH FOOD TASTING (B)
Known as “Deep Water Pier” in Cantonese, Sham Shui Po is a working-class neighborhood located in the heart of Kowloon and one of the most authentic parts of Hong Kong that never sleeps and has something worthwhile for everyone. Sham Shui Po is a shopper’s heaven filled with streets packed with everything from clothes, electronics, accessories, and even phones. Sham Shui Po is also known as a foodie haven, where traditional restaurants and hawker food courts (Dai Pai Dong) are thriving.
Our unique Sham Shui Po Walking tour begins with a visit to the Jockey Club Creative Arts Center, which houses nearly 140 artists and art organizations pursuing their works in various art forms, mainly in visual and performing arts. Then, we stop at The Heritage Tea House, a true hidden gem where you may pick your favorite Chinese tea served with a tasting portion of dim sum snacks made fresh daily. Immerse yourself back to the old days of Hong Kong as we visit the Mei Ho House of Shek Kip Mei Public Housing Estate – the oldest public housing complex in Hong Kong. This housing estate consisted of 29 concrete blocks, built-in 1954 to resettle the homeless victims from the burned down shanties. Mei Ho House is still standing today while all other buildings of the estate dating from the 1950s have been demolished and replaced by new ones.
Take a break at Lau Sum Kee for a bowl of wonton noodles. This café opened its doors in 1956 and still passed along the tradition of mixing its noodle dough with a heavy bamboo pole. We walk down to Fook Wing Street Market, where you will be astonished by all the mind-blowing selection of toys, wholesale stationery, gift items, souvenirs, and in-house decorations. We stop at a street-side stall for freshly pressed fruit and veggie juice. Then head to the 50-year old Kung Wo Tofu Factory for a soothing bowl of silky fresh tofu dessert, a popular dessert made with soft, silken tofu pudding served with warm cane sugar syrup flavored with ginger.
We continue our walk to the Golden Computer Center and Arcade, where you will find video game, software, and accessory stores. Then, we walk further down to Apliu Street Market. The shops here sell a wide variety of electronic products at reasonable prices. Whether you are interested in gadgets and electronics from the market, Apliu Street has something for everyone. Walk further down to Pei Ho Street Market, a bustling wet market and a perfect place to experience Sham Shui Po like a local. The street is lined with stores and stalls that sell fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and all sorts of daily necessities. To complete our walking tour, we will stop at a traditional Hong Kong café to enjoy a cup of classic milk tea (strong black tea mixed with condensed milk) and pineapple buns (popular amongst the locals) before heading back to our hotel.
